As my laundry dries, I set up my new laptop. After purchasing it, I have enough money left to rent a car, but that won’t leave much of a buffer once I get to Portland. I look up train schedules and prices. Amtrak would be a little cheaper, but I doubt I can get to the King Street Station before the evening train leaves, and besides, if anything goes wrong en route, I could get stranded in the daylight. Maybe I should just talk to Bryer to see if she has room for me. Neither option quells the churning in my stomach.

My phone buzzes. Maggie has impeccable timing.
